I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago and I was really happy to see that it was nominated to this year’s Oscar awards, after a brilliant last year with participation in most of the international film festivals where it succeeded in winning no more and no less than 35 awards.

Beasts of the Southern Wild tells the story of Hushpuppy, a young girl, living with her father in a place separated from the modern world. It’s a small community where people try to stay together, where values like money and consumerism do not fit.

The movie shows the path that Hushpuppy takes. Her evolution, her understanding of what the meaning of live is, of how our actions influence everything around us.

Tha main character, Hushpuppy, played by Quvenzhané Wallis is so full of color and personality. Benh Zeitlin, the director of this movie (his first movie actually) managed to create the perfect child movie character. Besides the attempt to grow up and understand the world around her, Hushppupy is a child with a rich imagination, believing in stories adults tell her to scare her sometimes. She believes in long gone creatures which come to hunt at night, from which she learns to be stronger and more confident in herself.

It’s a dramatic movie, the story isn’t exactly a happy one, but it gives you a nice feeling about the strong relationship that families can develop.

‘Once there was a Hushpuppy and she lived with her Daddy in the Bathtub.’
