DJ Harvey has always had the air of a man who does what he likes, regardless of the consequences.

That’s certainly the case with his musical output, which over recent years has veered from the psychedelic stoner rock of the Map of Africa project (a collaboration with Thomas Bullock of Rub ‘N’ Tug fame), to the more electronic, dancefloor-inclined ramblings of Locussolus. Here, he takes on another alias, Wildest Dreams, delivering an album of largely trippy, ’70s-inspired West Coast rock with a decidedly acid-fried finish. It’s a better set than Map of Africa ever was, and sounds like it was recorded at Sunset Sound on the “Strip” back in the early 1970s. It’s loose, guitar-heavy, baggy, wonky, Balearic and, yes, pretty good.
