To Bupdapest we’ve been before, more than once. And yes, it’s a proper country capital city in all aspects – history, culture, nightlife, cuisine. But this time, during our 4 days road trip in Hungary, we decided to leave Budapest behind and see what the smaller towns of the country have to offer.
Hungary first formed as a state in the year 1000, when King Istvan (Stephen) was crowned. About 200 years later the Mongols invaded eastern Europe, including Hungary, during the dynamic westward expansion of the Mongol Empire and of course left the country a complete mess. It was after this that the rulers of the country decided to invest time and effort in a stronger defense mechanism and this is how the first fortified castles appeared.
We always have a vacation in September as it’s not that hot anymore, not that full of tourists everywhere, the prices are lower and the weather is still quite good for staying outside. This year, we changed plans a few times before actually choosing the final destination, and as the weather up in the mountains was not looking too good, we said that a road trip in Hungary will do the trick.
