[Greece] Summer vacation in Corfu
A bit tired of driving every summer more than ten hours to the Romanian sea side and taking advantage of a direct flight from Sibiu, for our 2022 summer vacation we headed to Corfu, a beautiful and small Greek Island, to enjoy the sun, the sea and some quality family time.
We enjoyed every bit of the trip, starting with getting there after a 1h30 flight from Sibiu. We rented a car for our week in Corfu and got the chance to explore the Northern part of the island. Being quite small, Corfu allows you to check out new places every day without having to drive too much or change residence.
We visited Corfu mid-June, at the beginning of the summer vacation and it was a wise decision – not very hot outside (but still warm enough to sun and sea bathe), not too many tourists (better, if possible, to avoid July and August), friendly staff everywhere we went, not crowded on the roads or beaches.
Corfu offers a bit of everything for everyone, from small and remote pebble peaches to large sand beaches surrounded by hotels and restaurants. For us, as we don’t like too much hustle, we tried to find small beaches, with not too many people around as to be able to enjoy the quiet and the sea around.
We spent 7 days in Corfu and changed accommodation twice. We found some nice places, that pleased our souls, but we also got to some big and noisy beaches that I wouldn’t visit again.
Agios Georgios Beach
Our first stop was Agios Georgios where we also had our accommodation for 3 nights. A mix of pebbles and sand beach, we spent two days on the local beach here as it was large enough for exploring and almost no one around to bother us. Agios Georgios has some local tavernas close to the beach for dinner and lunch and a small drinks and food shop right at the foot of the beach (with cold beer), so for the first two days and for getting a bit habituated with the vacation mood and the island it was perfect.
Porto Timoni Beach
That was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. A double beach actually, it can only be reached by foot or boat. After a 20 minutes hike from the nearby village Afionas, you get to have this spectacular view in front of your eyes.
The hike is not the hardest, but still is can get a big tiring on a summer hot day. Lucky for us, as it was mid-June, we got to enjoy the two beaches without too many people around, as I’ve read that it can get quite busy and crowded. Get some drinks and food if you intend to spend the whole day there as you will not find any tavernas or beach bars around.
Take also some time to wonder around the small streets of the Afionas village, it’s so colorful.
Rovinia Beach
Another small, pebble peach only reachable by foot on a 10-15 minutes path. We enjoyed this one so much as the waters were perfectly blue and we had some shade from the trees and the rocks. It’s a wild beach with nothing around so bring supplies if you plan to spend the whole day here.
Avlaki Beach
Quite a big pebble beach but totally empty, with no one around. Easily reachable by car, you have some tavernas close by.
Day Boat trip
From Avlaki we rented a small boat and spent one day wondering around the island. In Corfu, if you have a driver’s license you are also allowed to drive a boat after a 30 minutes training. Having the boat to ourselves, we explored a bit the offshore, we docked on small remote beaches and in small villages for drinks and lunch.
Nisaki Beach
A very small pebble beach, surrounded by rock formations, located between the villages Barbati and Kassiopi. I would imagine it gets crowded in the main summer months, but for us it was just perfect, a few people around, a taverna right across the street.
Agios Stefanos Beach
In search of some sand beaches, we came across this one. Very suitable for kids, lots of sand around, shallow waters, perfect for relaxing while the kids play safe. Plus a kind of hotel/resort right next to it, with a summer terrace for drinks and food and access to the pool (including a kids pool) if you have lunch or dinner there. Not really my kind of beach, as it’s too big and has too many sun beds and umbrellas for my taste, but again, as it wasn’t that crowded around, we enjoyed our day here.
Sidari beach
This is definitely not a place I would visit again. Big beach, with lots of noise and people around, with too many bars and restaurants playing music. We had one of our accommodations in Sidari and visited the beach one afternoon, but it was more than enough and we headed to other places in the next days.
Corfu Town
The island also has a main town, where the airport is. The center is nice to wonder around in summer and for those who are looking for more options to have fun (also at night), it’s a good idea to spend a couple of days here. We only had a couple of hours to explore it, stopped for a good lamb gyros and headed back home.
What about the food?
Corfu was not top of the top for us in terms of restaurants and food, but still it was enjoyable – feta and tomato salads, fish and sea food, wine of the house and some local beers and it gets you in a vacation mood for sure. We didn’t search for specific places to eat out, we just headed to the local tavernas and it was always a nice experience. There’s plenty to chose from in every village and larger beaches always have at least a beach bar with fresh drinks and some quick bites.
