[Romania] Street/Fast Food in Sibiu

Street Food in Sibiu is, in my humble opinion, a sort of a myth. We don’t really have this street food mentality and unfortunately, the city tends to get full of wannabe street food places with pretzels, frozen pizza and sandwiches filled with too much mayonnaise and garlic.

Still, here is a (too) short list of street food (or fast food) places that we sometimes check out.

Marietto

Marietto has been for so many years (maybe 10 or more) one of our favorite street food place. It’s a small family business that managed to survive all these years due to their approach to using fresh, quality ingredients. Their sandwiches are a perfect combination of freshly baked pita bread with different types of meat, and on the spot grilled vegetables. They also have a vegetarian and vegan version of the sandwiches. My all-times favorite still is the Italian one – with a grilled Italian sausage plus extra spicy.

Plăcinte Bihorene (Salty Pies)

If you’re looking for an authentic, off the path place for a quick bite, this is the place. An old lady bakes pies for half a day and fills them with potatoes, cabbage or jams and chocolate. So either you’re craving for something salty or for something sweet, this is your man (or woman, actually). The interaction with her is always pure delight, she enjoys telling stories even if she only speaks Romanian.

Pizza Baci

Open by a Romanian who has recently returned back home after living for too many years in Italy, Pizza Baci truly has one of the best pizza in town. They specialize in pizza al taglio, the Rome style, with quality ingredients and with a perfect dough, fluffy on the inside and crusty on the outside. We find this place a perfect choice just before going out for some drinks in summer and not only.

Urban Food

For us, Urban Food is a perfect option for a very lazy (read that hangover) weekends, when we want to eat something a bit more heavy, with meat and sauces and fries, that would make us even lazier working on the digestion. They have pork based stuff, like burgers, hot dogs, but also chicken wings or chilli con carne. I appreciate that they try to work with fresh and local ingredients as much as possible and that brings a lot of flavor. They also have an eat-in place right in the heart of Sibiu, with a nice terrace to enjoy the sun.

Sandwhich pub

Their beef pastrami sandwich is a pure delight. Simple food, few, but quality ingredients, nothing else you would need for a perfect recipe. Plus the side pickled cucumbers! We love this combination and chose it every time we pay this place a visit. It’s situated in the city center, in the Haberman Markt, a place which, in my opinion should be the Mecca of street food restaurants.

Mo’s Burger

We see this place as the local version of Mc Dondald’s. Tasty burgers for when we’re in the mood for something like this. They have a nice location just outside the city center so good idea to eat in or also quickly pick your burger and fries out and head to the nearby by Subarini Park.
