The Evangelical Church of Saint Mary from the Huet Square is the most famous Gothic-style church in Sibiu and its massive 73.34 m high bell tower is a landmark of the city. Every Friday morning, from 10 AM to 1 PM, going up the 192 stairs to get to the top of the tower bell will give you not only a beautiful view over Sibiu and its surroundings, but also a proper gastronomy lesson.

The Friday Gastro Tower is a continuous project developed by the Sibiu Tourism Agency, My Transylvania Asociation and the Evangelical Parish of Sibiu aiming to promote the regions of Sibiu (about which I wrote in detail HERE), their local products and gastronomy.

The guide joining the tour that lasts about 30 minutes, will give you a summary of the history of the church and the building of the tower and once you’re up, you will get to know more about each of Sibiu’s five regions, their geographical characteristics and about their local producers and products.

If it’s a sunny day with clear skies, you can admire the city of Sibiu from above and see as far as the Făgăraș Mountains. From each of the 4 small towers that the bell tower has, you can also see 4 of the Sibiu’s regions, with green hills and forests and small villages in between.

Once you’re back down from the tower, you can taste and buy some of the local products you learned about during the tour. Every Friday there’s a small local producers market (called Green Friday Market; Ro – Vinerea Verde) right in front of the Evangelical Church. You will get to try cheese, bread, meat products, fresh vegetables and honey, just to name a few.

In 2019 Sibiu will be the European Region of Gastronomy and this tour is a perfect starting point for better understanding the story behind and the roots of the cuisine of this area.
