Biking has been one of my favorite outdoor activities since forever (thanks, mom&dad, for buying me my first bike when I was about 7 and getting the chance to spend all of my childhood summers riding a bike in the countryside). In recent years, mostly due to an improper personal time management and to not having the right people around, I almost forgot all about biking for the fun of it ( I use my bike in the city, but it’s purely a practical and easy way to move around).

2021 offered me the chance to include some biking days in my schedule and as I live in Sibiu, the Transylvanian Highlands are a perfect destination for day trips – the outskirts of Sibiu offer everything you need – nature, some hills to get you a bit busy from all the pedaling upwards, small villages to explore and picnic spots with perfect views around.

We’ve been exploring the area in the Transylvanian Highlands for years now. We keep visiting the Saxon villages and their Fortified Churches, we sleep in the small guest houses where village women cook delicious meals, we go to local brunches, we do the Saxon Trek tour, so we’re quite used to what this area has to offer. Still, every time there’s something new to it, as to not get too bored.

Of course, you can get to all of that by car, but things get much better when you get there by bike (and trekking, of course). Going from one village to another, passing through pastures and meeting shepherds and their herds (behave nicely to the dogs, though), going through forests and getting to see all this diverse local flora and fauna, plus doing a proper workout. Should I say more?

If you think you can’t do it, try an eBike, life gets easier. Don’t imagine it’s going to be a piece of cake to bike 40 – 60km/ day, but an eBike will for sure help a bit, at least when you have to go uphill.

There are plenty of trails to chose from, some are marked, some only have the GPS track, but all of them will for sure help you disconnect from a daily routine and reconnect with nature and with the simple and relaxed village life. You can venture alone or with friends, but you can also have a local guide with you, one that knows all the trails, can organize a longer trip for you with food and accommodation and also rent bikes.

That being said, enjoy the ride and Welcome to Transylvania 🙂
